Diverse Industrial Base
Ohio's manufacturing base remains solid, with a steady increase of small to medium-sized firms involved in manufacturing. In Youngstown, for example, the metropolitan area has added 21,000 net new jobs since 1992, and 7,000 of those jobs have been in manufacturing. Overall, about 20 percent of workers in Northeast Ohio are employed in manufacturing, compared to the U.S. average
of 15 percent.
Northeast Ohio has seen a steady increase in the biomedical industry in recent years, with a 31 percent increase in workers hired in these companies. This, in part, is an outgrowth of major research facilities in the area, including major hospitals like The Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals Health Systems, and polymer research conducted at area universities, especially The University of Akron and Case Western Reserve University.
Northeast Ohio's diverse industrial base includes these primary industries:

In addition, Ohio is the nation's eighth largest exporter and Northeast Ohio contributes almost a third of that total - more than $8 billion.
Recreational, cultural and educational opportunities are abundant throughout Northeast Ohio. You'll find world-class museums and cultural events, exciting professional sports and amusement parks, and more golf courses per capita than anywhere else in the United States - all in Northeast Ohio. In fact, this region ranks fifth in the nation in number of major cultural resources per one million residents.
Northeast Ohio's network of 55 colleges and universities comprises the second largest concentration of educational institutions in the nation (after New York City). Outstanding university and vocational training programs, coupled with exceptional liberal arts colleges, provide abundant educational opportunities.
With so much to offer, Northeast Ohio is surprisingly affordable. Housing costs in the NEOTEC region are among the most competitive in the nation, with a wide variety of lifestyle options available.
Variety, Quality in Medical Care
The health care industry has changed a great deal in recent years. But tradition still plays a key role in Northeast Ohio, where high standards in the industry are set by the internationally acclaimed Cleveland Clinic. Proximity to Cleveland and Pittsburgh provides residents with easy access and many options for outstanding care.
Individual facilities within the region range from general care to trauma units to specialty hospitals. In addition, the Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED), a selective medical college in Rootstown, works with area hospitals to train students to be physicians. This school of medicine graduates many fine professionals who establish a practice in the local area.
